The start of the school year is a great time to begin discussions about Science in your classroom. Defining science can take a little time and experience for young children. It is not necessary to have a static definition of science, but rather to begin the process for children to "think like scientists". Take the next few weeks to try the following:
Have a circle time discussion about Science. Ask students, "What does Science mean to you?" Write down their ideas.
Choose a story to read that includes an investigation or exploration of the world.
Identify your Science Center. Discuss how other centers can include doing science explorations as well, such as the Building area or the Dramatic Play area.
Use images to show different kinds of scientists and engineers.
