Science Talk: What is Science?
Thinking Like a Scientist
The start of the school year is a great time to begin discussions about Science in your classroom. Defining science can take a little time and experience for young children. It is not necessary to have a static definition of science, but rather to begin the process for children to "think like scientists". Take the next few weeks to try the following:
- Have a circle time discussion about Science. Ask students, "What does Science mean to you?" Write down their ideas.
- Choose a story to read that includes an investigation or exploration of the world.
- Identify your Science Center. Discuss how other centers can include doing science explorations as well, such as the Building area or the Dramatic Play area.
- Use images to show different kinds of scientists and engineers.
